Booking choice: The three-town coach day, from $205 per person. Check dates Compare the options below
All three are hill towns north of Rome, but they are different days out. Assisi is a pilgrimage town and a UNESCO World Heritage site; Orvieto is a lively town with a Gothic Duomo; Civita di Bagnoregio is a tiny village you reach on a long, steep pedestrian bridge.
Assisi is the furthest, so a tour that includes it leaves less time for the others.
The quick answer
Pick Assisi for St Francis, the basilica and St Carlo Acutis; Orvieto for the Duomo and an easy town walk; Civita for the view and the bridge. Assisi plus Orvieto is the classic combo. Orvieto plus Civita (no Assisi) gives more time in each. The three-town coach day fits all three into 13.75 hours.
How do Assisi, Orvieto and Civita compare?
Assisi is the spiritual heavyweight, Orvieto the easy cathedral town, Civita the photogenic village.
| Assisi | Orvieto | Civita di Bagnoregio | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Go for | St Francis, the basilica, St Carlo Acutis | The Gothic Duomo, St Patrick's Well | The village on the rock, the bridge |
| Entry | Basilica free | Duomo EUR 8 | EUR 5 bridge ticket |
| By train from Rome | 2 to 2.5 h, change at Foligno, bus up | About 1 h, then the funicular | No train to the village |
| Walking | Steep lanes and steps | Funicular up, then a town walk | Long, steep footbridge |
| Tours from | $205 | $108 | $108 |

Check dates for the three-town coach dayWhy choose Assisi?
For St Francis: his basilica and tomb, Santa Chiara, the Porziuncola in Santa Maria degli Angeli and the tomb of St Carlo Acutis.
Assisi is the reason most of these tours exist, and in 2026, the 800th anniversary of St Francis's death, it is busier than usual. Tours give it two to three hours. See the Basilica of St Francis guide.

Why choose Orvieto?
For the Gothic Duomo and its mosaic facade, in a town on top of a tufa cliff.
It is the easiest of the three to reach, by train and funicular. On Assisi combos you get about an hour; on Orvieto and Civita days about 1.25 to 2 hours. Plan it with Orvieto on a day trip.

Why choose Civita di Bagnoregio?
For the setting: a small village on an eroding rock, reached by a steep pedestrian bridge.
Access costs EUR 5 per person and is free for children under 6, according to the official ticket page. Guests warn that the walk is demanding, especially in the heat: one called it a long steep hill at the end of the tour, another said to make sure you are in shape. City Wonders notes there is no direct public transport to the bridge entrance, which is why most people go on a tour.

Can you see all three in one day?
Yes, on the three-town coach day: about 3 hours in Assisi, 1.5 in Civita and 1.5 in Orvieto, over 13.75 hours.
It costs $205, the same as the coach day with lunch, and includes the Civita access fee. The catch: a bilingual leader speaking English and Spanish, free time rather than guided walks, no lunch, and a strong fitness level. Children under 11 need a car seat you bring yourself. Guests rate it 4.7 and report plenty of free time at each stop.

Three towns, one coach: the day leaves Roma Tiburtina at 7:00 AM with the Civita fee paid.

Then Orvieto and Civita get much more time, and the day is shorter.
The Civita and Orvieto wine day ($108) spends about two hours in each town with a farmhouse lunch and five wines near Montepulciano. The Orvieto and Civita driver day ($415 per person as listed) does the same pair by private car, with St Patrick's Well; its driver is not a licensed guide and tickets are extra.
Orvieto and Civita without the long drive to Assisi: two hours each and a wine lunch.
Check dates for the Civita and Orvieto wine dayWhich tour covers which town?
Only the three-town day covers all three; Assisi tours cover Orvieto too, except the Assisi-only driver day.
- Assisi + Orvieto: the coach day with lunch, the small-group and private Welcome Italy days, the Carlo Acutis day.
- Assisi only: the private driver day to Assisi (with Santa Maria degli Angeli).
- Assisi + Civita + Orvieto: the three-town coach day.
- Orvieto + Civita, no Assisi: the Civita and Orvieto wine day, the Orvieto and Civita driver day.

And if you would rather have wine than saints?
Consider Tuscany instead: the Montepulciano and Pienza day with a Brunello lunch is the most reviewed day trip on this site, at 5,677 reviews.
It costs $113 and is rated 4.7. It does not visit Assisi, Orvieto or Civita.
Wine country instead? Montepulciano, Pienza and a farm lunch with Brunello.

Is Civita di Bagnoregio worth it?
For the view and the village, guests say yes; just be ready for the steep bridge, which several reviewers found tough in the heat.
Which is better for a first visit, Assisi or Orvieto?
Assisi if St Francis or St Carlo Acutis matter to you; Orvieto if you want a shorter day with a great cathedral.
Can you reach Civita by train?
Not directly: there is no train to the village, and no direct public transport to the bridge entrance, which is why most visitors take a tour.
