What to wear in Assisi

An Assisi and Orvieto day means churches with a dress code, steep stone lanes and up to 14 hours away from your hotel. Dress for all three.

Every church on these tours asks for covered knees and shoulders, and the operators say it is enforced. The rest of the day is walking: up and down Assisi's lanes, across Orvieto, and on the three-town day over the Civita bridge.

Older travelers and families should read the fitness notes too: the three-town day asks for strong fitness, and none of the tours is wheelchair accessible.

The quick answer

Cover knees and shoulders, for men and women, in every church: no shorts or sleeveless tops. Wear comfortable shoes with grip for steep, cobbled lanes. Bring water, a light layer or scarf, sun protection, and a card or cash for lunch. None of the tours is wheelchair accessible.

What is the dress code in Assisi?

Knees and shoulders covered, for men and women, in every church; the operators say it is strictly enforced and you risk being refused entry.

That means no shorts and no sleeveless tops at the Basilica of St Francis, Santa Chiara, Santa Maria degli Angeli or the Orvieto Duomo. Light trousers, a midi or long skirt and a T-shirt or blouse with sleeves all work. The Welcome Italy private day describes its own dress code as smart casual.

Which shoes should you wear?

Walking shoes with grip: the lanes are steep and polished, with plenty of steps.

Guests repeat it across every tour: "wear comfortable shoes", "a lot of trekking uphill so have good walking shoes". Leave new shoes and smooth soles at the hotel.

Is a scarf enough to cover your shoulders?

Yes, a light scarf or shawl over bare shoulders works, and it is useful on a hot day.

One small-group guest advised women to bring a light scarf for the cathedrals because the day was very hot. Covering knees is harder to improvise, so wear trousers or a longer skirt from the start.

What should you pack for a long day?

Pack light but plan for 10 to 13.75 hours away from your hotel.

  • Water, and snacks for the drive
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for the walks
  • A light layer or scarf for shoulders in the churches
  • A card or cash for lunch, drinks and any entry not included
  • A charged phone and your booking confirmation
  • Any medication you need during the day

Coach guests mention at least six hours on the bus, so something to read or listen to helps.

What is the weather like, and what if it is hot?

Summer days can be very hot on the exposed hill towns; guests on summer tours mention heat in Assisi and at Civita.

On the private driver days you can shift the schedule: one guest's driver moved the visit an hour earlier to avoid the summer heat. In cooler months, bring a layer for the early start; one December guest had foggy weather in Assisi and still enjoyed the day.

Is the day trip suitable for older travelers?

For most, with the right tour: both towns are steep, the day is long, and none of the tours is wheelchair accessible.

The coach day with lunch asks for moderate fitness, and one 78-year-old guest wrote that there was a lot of walking but he did not find it difficult. The three-town day asks for strong fitness and is not recommended for travelers with back problems. The Welcome Italy private day says it is not for travelers with heart problems or other serious medical conditions. For the least walking, the minivan and private days with hotel pickup cut the time spent getting to meeting points.

Can you bring children?

Yes on most tours, but check the age bands and the fitness level.

Which tour is easiest on the legs?

The minivan and private days: hotel pickup, a smaller group and a guide who sets the pace.

One Welcome Italy guest wrote that the guide let them move at their own pace. The three-town day is the most demanding, with significant uphill walking at Civita. Compare the options in Assisi, Orvieto or Civita and the costs in the price guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can men wear shorts in Assisi?

Not into the churches: knees must be covered for men and women, and no sleeveless tops.

Do I need hiking boots?

No, comfortable walking shoes with grip are enough; the lanes are steep and cobbled, not trails.

Can I bring a stroller?

The Welcome Italy small-group and private days, the Carlo Acutis day and both private driver days are listed as stroller accessible, but expect steps and steep lanes.

Is a car seat provided for children?

Not on the three-town coach day: children under 11 must sit in a car seat you bring. Several minivan and private days list infant seats as available.
