Orvieto on a day trip

Orvieto is a cliff-top town built around a Gothic cathedral with a mosaic facade. On most Assisi combos you get an hour or two there, so it pays to know exactly what to see.

Orvieto is about 1.5 hours from Rome by road and about an hour by train, which makes it the first stop on most Assisi days. That is also its weakness on a combo tour: the time there is short, and on the coach days it is unguided.

An hour covers the Duomo and a short walk, if you know where to go.

The quick answer

Allow 30 minutes for the Duomo (EUR 8, free for under-11s) and an hour or more for the town. Sunday visits are tricky: the Duomo opens to visitors only 10:00 to 11:00 and from 13:00. The coach day with lunch gives about an hour, the three-town day 1.5 hours, the Civita and Orvieto wine day about two.

How long do you get in Orvieto on each tour?

From about an hour on the coach day with lunch to about two hours on the Civita and Orvieto wine day.

What is the Orvieto Duomo ticket and what does it cover?

EUR 8 for the cathedral, the Emilio Greco museum and the underground chambers, or EUR 11 with the Faina Etruscan museum; under-11s are free.

The Duomo is the paid entry of the day; the striped flank and the mosaic facade are free to admire from the square. The Welcome Italy small-group and private days and the Carlo Acutis day include the ticket; on the coach days you buy it yourself if you want to go in.

What should you see inside the Duomo?

The facade first, then Luca Signorelli's frescoes in the Chapel of San Brizio inside the cathedral.

The Greenline listing describes the cathedral as a Gothic building from the late 1200s noted for its stained glass, sculptures and mosaics. With only an hour in town, give the Duomo about 30 minutes, as the small-group itinerary does, and spend the rest walking the old streets.

What are the Duomo's hours, and what about Sundays?

Daily from 9:30, closing at 17:00 in winter, 19:00 in spring and October and 20:00 in summer; on Sundays and holy days visits are only 10:00 to 11:00 and from 13:00.

The Sunday gap catches out a lot of day-trippers: a coach that reaches Orvieto mid-morning on a Sunday may arrive while the cathedral is closed to visitors. Winter hours (January, February, November, December) end at 17:00; March to May and October at 19:00; June to September at 20:00. On Sundays the afternoon session ends at 16:30 or 17:30 depending on the season.

Planning a weekday? The small-group day includes a 30-minute Duomo visit with the ticket.

Is St Patrick's Well worth it?

Yes if you have the time: it is a 16th-century well about 53 metres deep, with 248 steps on a double spiral staircase.

It was built between 1527 and 1537 for Pope Clement VII. A full ticket is EUR 6, EUR 4.50 reduced and free under 6, and it opens at 9:00 (10:00 in winter), according to Orvietoviva. On a one-hour stop it is a stretch on top of the Duomo. The Carlo Acutis day and the Orvieto and Civita driver day build it in.

What can you do in Orvieto in one hour?

Walk to the Duomo square, see the facade, and stroll back through the lanes; skip the museums.

  • Head straight for Piazza del Duomo and the facade.
  • Go inside only if the hours and the ticket allow; budget 30 minutes.
  • Use the rest for the lanes around the cathedral and a coffee.
  • Leave the well and the underground for a longer visit.

One coach guest wrote that an hour was not nearly long enough; a driver-day guest wished for more time for the underground.

How do you get up to the town?

By funicular from Orvieto station, a ride of about two minutes for EUR 1.30; tours arrive by road.

If you come by train, the funicular is the easy link. For a relaxed Orvieto-only day the train is a good option; see Rome to Assisi and Orvieto by train.

Where do you have lunch on an Orvieto day?

It depends on the tour: the coach day eats near Lake Trasimeno, the wine day at a farmhouse near Montepulciano, the minivan and private days at a trattoria you pay for.

Guests on the driver days mention their drivers recommending restaurants in Orvieto. If you want Orvieto and Civita without Assisi, compare them in Assisi, Orvieto or Civita.
